In the 1850's Charles Shaw acquired a state land grant in the southern Moore County of North Carolina - and began timbering that land. In 1876, the Raleigh Augusta Railroad came through, which brought John T. Patrick who purchased 675 acres to build a health resort. Southern Pines was the ideal location for weary train travelers, going from large Northern Towns to Florida, to break the long journey - and recover from the days of traveling. Southern Pines is now the largest population of all Moore County towns.
